In the beginning, there was the Dark Fire. From it came all power, both Light and Dark. The Dark Fire chose a select few people to receive its gifts, and they were called Casters. On each Caster's Sixteenth Moon, they were Claimed by the Fire for Light or Dark. One and one they went, maintaining the delicate balance of the Order of Things.

Then, one summer, a Claiming Moon was called before its time, and a girl named Lena Duchannes Claimed herself for both Light and Dark, and the Order of Things was shattered.
Although the Order was repaired, the damage the rupture had caused could never be undone. The veil between our world and the next became thin, and some Casters took advantage of the broken Order to remake the world in a way that suited them a bit more.

In Chicago, that City of Big Shoulders, the City that Works, something else is at work. Mostly neutral territory before, it became flooded with Dark Casters once the Order broke, and the city darkened in turn. The weather fluctuated wildly, and bodies turned up without a drop of blood left in them. Creatures like malicious hurricanes sped through the streets, ghosts shimmered into existence almost everywhere you looked, and the Tribune has written more than once that strange lights have been seen in the sky over Soldier Field.

All of this energy, too, exerts a pull through the entire universe, finding those in other worlds, other realities - those who have that same seed of darkness inside of them, those who, one day, will be the catalyst for great change - and brings them to Chicago. Why isn't completely clear. But the Order of Things is balanced on the edge of a blade, and something - or someone - wants to give it a push.
